This is the item that separates owners who keep a modern four-stroke running for years from owners who find themselves buying a top end. It is not a difficult job on either the KTM EXC platform or the Honda CRF, but it is one where guessing at the number does real damage.

Valve clearance is the small gap between the cam and the top of the valve when the valve is closed. It is there so that the valve can seat fully as the engine heats and expands. As a four-stroke runs, the valve seat wears very slightly and the valve sinks a little further into the head. That closes up the clearance. Eventually there is no gap at all, the valve never quite seats, hot gas leaks past it, and the valve face burns. A burnt valve means a head off, a valve job, and usually a new piston while you are in there.

The symptoms of tightening clearances come late. Hard starting when hot is the classic one, because a valve that is not seating loses compression when everything has expanded. A change in idle quality and a loss of power at the top end can follow. By the time the bike is telling you, the clearances have been out of specification for a while. The 30-hour check is there to find the change while it is still a matter of swapping a shim.

The job needs a feeler gauge set, the tools to remove the tank, seat and valve cover, and the manual for your exact model and year, because clearances and the procedure differ between the KTM and the Honda and can differ between years of the same bike. Set the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke as the manual describes, and measure each valve with the feeler gauge. The specification for intake and exhaust is in the manual and is different for each. Write down what you measure.

If a valve is within specification, close it up and check again at 30 hours. If one is tight, the fix on both these engines is a thinner shim under the bucket, which means removing the cam, lifting the bucket, measuring the shim that is in there, and fitting one that brings the clearance back to the middle of the range. The math for the new shim is simple and the manual walks through it. Cam cap fasteners go back on to the torque value in the service manual, in the order the manual gives, and never by feel.

A valve that has tightened a lot in a short interval, or one that keeps needing a thinner shim at every check, is telling you the seat or the valve is wearing fast. That is the point at which a shim is no longer the answer and the head needs to come off for a proper look. Titanium valves on race-derived engines can wear quickly once the hard coating on the face is gone, and continuing to shim a worn valve just delays a larger bill.

Air filter care is valve care. Most fast valve wear on these engines traces back to dust getting past a badly seated or under-oiled filter and grinding away at the seats. Our dirt bike guidance lists the filter as a five-hour item, two hours in dust, and keeping to that is the best thing you can do for the valves. If you find a valve that has moved a lot, check the airbox and the intake boot for the dust trail that explains it.

Thirty hours is the normal interval and it assumes normal use. Racing, sustained high revs, and riding in fine dust all shorten it. A bike used for hard enduro or desert work is better checked at shorter intervals, particularly when it is new and the seats are bedding in. Keep a log of hours and the clearances you measured; the trend over three or four checks tells you more about the engine than any single measurement does.

If you would rather not do this yourself, it is a routine job for any dealer or shop that works on these bikes. What matters is that it gets done on the interval, and that whoever does it uses the specification for the exact model and year rather than a number remembered from a different bike.
