The 50-hour CVT belt inspection on a side-by-side, done properly
A drive belt is the one part on a CVT machine that will strand you without notice, and the 50-hour inspection is where you catch it beforehand.

Our UTV maintenance guidance lists a drive belt inspection every 50 hours, and the note against it is blunt: a belt that lets go on the trail usually takes the cover with it. That is why belt inspection belongs on the schedule as a separate item and not just as something you glance at during an oil change. Fifty hours is the normal interval. Heavy towing, sand, deep mud, and a lot of low-speed crawling in high range all shorten it, and if you do that kind of riding, look sooner.
The first thing to know is which machines this applies to. Most of the side-by-sides on our list use a rubber belt CVT: the Polaris RZR and Ranger platforms, the Can-Am X3 and Defender, the Kawasaki KRX, and the Yamaha RMAX. The Honda Pioneer platform of 2016 onward, the Honda Talon platform of 2019 onward and the Yamaha YXZ platform of 2016 onward use geared or automatic transmissions with no CVT belt at all, so this item does not apply to them. If you own one of those, check your own manual for the equivalent driveline service item.
Getting to the belt means removing the clutch cover, which on most machines is a ring of fasteners and a gasket or seal. Do this with the engine cold and the machine on level ground. Note where the fasteners came from, because some covers use different lengths in different positions. When the cover goes back on, the fasteners are torqued to a value that is in your service manual, not guessed at, because an over-tightened cover cracks and a loose one lets water and dust into the clutch housing.
With the cover off, look at the belt before you touch it. Glazing shows as a shiny, hard surface on the sides of the belt where it has slipped and overheated. Cracks across the cogs on the inside of the belt mean the rubber is fatiguing. Missing cogs, frayed edges, or a belt that has worn noticeably narrower than a new one are all reasons to replace it now rather than at the next interval. Any deposit of black dust in the housing is belt material that used to be on the belt.
Turn the belt slowly by hand and check the whole length, because damage from one hard slip event is often local to a short section. Feel for hard spots and flat spots. Then look at the clutch sheaves themselves. Grooves, scoring, or a bluish heat tint on the faces of the primary or secondary clutch tell you the belt has been slipping badly, and a new belt on damaged sheaves will not last. Check that the sheaves move freely and that nothing is packed into the clutch weights or rollers.
Belt slip is usually the rider, not the belt. Using high range for slow technical work, feathering the throttle on a hill climb, or spinning the tires in mud while the belt sits at one point on the sheaves all generate heat the belt cannot shed. Most makers say to use low range below a certain speed and for any towing or crawling, and the exact guidance is in your owner's manual. Ride the machine the way the transmission wants and the 50-hour check becomes routine rather than a rescue.
Water is the other enemy. A wet belt slips, and a clutch housing with water in it will keep slipping until it dries out. If you have been through a crossing deep enough to reach the intake or exhaust for the clutch housing, expect some slip afterwards and let it dry before loading it. Check the clutch intake and outlet ducts for a snorkel or a screen, and make sure they are clear. A housing full of mud is a housing that will cook a belt.
Carry a spare. Every experienced side-by-side owner does, along with the tool to open the cover and whatever the maker supplies for spreading the secondary clutch to fit a new belt. Practice the change at home once, on a clean floor, so the first time you do it is not in the dark on a trail with a shredded belt wrapped around the clutch. Match the spare by platform code and year: a belt listed for a RANGER-XP machine of 2017 to 2026 is not the belt for a RANGER-MID 570.
A belt that passes inspection at 50 hours is not a belt that will last another 50 in every condition. Treat the interval as the longest you will go without looking. If the machine has started to feel soft on takeoff, smells of hot rubber after a climb, or has lost top speed, look at the belt straight away, whatever the hour meter says.
