The value for your wheel fasteners is in your owner's manual or service manual, and it depends on the machine, the stud size, the wheel material and sometimes the model year. What does not depend on any of those is the routine: when to check, how to check, and what to do if something has moved. A good routine with the manual's number beats a memorized number with no routine.

Wheel fasteners loosen for a handful of reasons. A wheel that was fitted with dirt or paint between the hub face and the wheel face settles as that material compresses. A fastener that was tightened in the wrong sequence can leave the wheel not fully seated. Aluminum wheels settle more than steel ones. And plain vibration, the sort every off-road machine sees, gradually turns a tight fastener into a loose one. The first rule is to re-check after any wheel has been off. That means after a tire change, after a puncture repair, after a brake inspection, and after a new set of wheels goes on. New wheels, especially aluminum ones, often need a third check. This is not paranoia; it is how a wheel stays on.

Do not guess whether it is at the right value by feel; if any have moved, lift the machine, loosen that wheel's fasteners, and re-tighten all of them in sequence to the manual's value with a torque wrench.

Sequence matters as much as the number. Tighten in a star pattern so the wheel is pulled evenly onto the hub, and tighten in stages rather than taking each fastener to full value in one go. On a five-bolt pattern the star is obvious; on a four-bolt pattern it is a cross. Look at the fasteners while you are checking them. Rounded corners, rust on the threads, a stud that stands proud of its neighbors, or a nut that looks longer than the rest are all reasons to replace hardware. A stud that has been over-tightened has been stretched, and a stretched stud does not hold preload. Impact wrenches are the usual cause. Use one to remove if you like, but tighten with a hand torque wrench to the manual's value.

Clean the mating faces every time a wheel comes off. Dirt, rust and paint between the hub and the wheel compress under load and that is one of the main reasons wheels loosen after fitting. A wire brush on the hub face and a wipe on the wheel face take a minute. Do not put grease or anti-seize on the studs unless your manual says to, because it changes how much clamp force a given torque value produces, and the manual's value assumes clean, dry threads.

Beadlock wheels, common on rock crawlers and some sport UTVs, have a second set of fasteners that hold the ring onto the wheel, and they need the same routine. Those bolts see the flex of the tire directly and they walk loose more readily than lug nuts do. Your wheel manufacturer's instructions give the value and the pattern. Check them after fitting, after the first ride, and on the same schedule as the lug nuts.

Carry the tool. A lug wrench that fits your fasteners, a way to lift the machine, and the manual's value written on a card in the glove box or tool bag. A wheel that is found loose on the trail can be tightened on the trail if you have the wrench, and left to go on a corner if you do not.
