A weekend in the dunes puts more wear on a machine than a month of forest trail. Fine sand gets into everything that moves, the engine runs hot and hard for long stretches, and the drive belt does more slipping and heat cycling than in any other terrain. None of that is a reason not to go. It is a reason to do a specific set of checks when you get home, in an order that catches the expensive problems first.

The air filter is the first thing to look at, and on a sand trip it should have been looked at more than once already. The site's UTV reminder schedule puts a filter check at about every 25 hours normally and about every 10 hours in severe conditions, and the note beside it says plainly that in sand or desert riding you should check it far more often than the book says. On an ATV the numbers are about 20 hours normally and about 8 in severe use. After a sand weekend, assume the filter is due regardless of the hour meter.

When you pull the filter, look at the clean side and the inside of the intake tract. Any sand there means the filter was overwhelmed or the seal was not seated, and that sand has been going into the engine. If you find it, clean the airbox thoroughly, replace the filter rather than cleaning it, and check that the lid seals properly when reassembled. A pre-filter or outerwear sock is a sensible addition for anyone who rides sand regularly, but it is an addition to the filter check, not a replacement for it.

The CVT is next. Sand riding is mostly high-load, high-rpm work, which is exactly where belts glaze and shed material. Open the clutch cover, look for a build-up of belt dust, and inspect the belt for glazing, cracking, and missing cogs. The belt inspection reminder is about every 50 hours, but a dune weekend can put a noticeable fraction of that wear onto the belt in two days. Blow the housing out, check the intake and exhaust ducts for the clutch are clear, and if the belt is questionable, fit the spare you carried and buy another.

Sand is abrasive to seals in a way that mud is not, and the places it gets past a seal first are wheel bearings, CV boots, and steering joints. Lift each corner, rock the wheel, and listen for grinding or feel for play. Inspect each CV boot along its full length for cuts or a split at the clamp, because a torn boot in sand fills the joint with grit quickly. The greasing reminder on a UTV is about every 25 hours, and after a sand trip that is a job for the same week, not the next interval.

Cooling deserves a specific look because sand riding runs the engine hotter than anything else. Check the coolant level and inspect the radiator fins for packed sand, which reduces airflow without being as obvious as a mud-packed screen. If the fan ran continuously during the trip, or you saw a temperature warning, look harder at the radiator and the fan circuit before the next ride.

Brakes wear faster in sand than almost anywhere, because the grit acts as lapping compound between pad and disc. The brake inspection reminder is about every 50 hours or six months on a UTV and about every 50 hours on an ATV. Pull a wheel and look at pad thickness, then check the disc for scoring. Sand also gets into the caliper slides, so if the pads are wearing unevenly the slides are a likely cause.

Fasteners are the last item and the one most often skipped. Sand riding is high-vibration, and the UTV fastener reminder of about every 25 hours covers wheel nuts, suspension bolts and anything else that carries a load. Go around the machine with a wrench and check that nothing has moved. Torque values are in your service manual. If you find a loose fastener, tighten it to the manual's value and check it again after the next outing.

Wash the machine last, not first. Washing before inspection pushes sand into places you have just cleaned, and hides the evidence of what was leaking or wearing. Do the checks with the machine dirty, then rinse it, then re-grease anything you flushed out. For dune access rules, permits and seasonal closures, confirm with the managing agency before you go, because they change and vary between sites.
