Our UTV maintenance guidance lists an inspection of brake pads and fluid every 50 hours or six months, whichever comes first, and the note against it says that water crossings and mud eat pads far faster than road use. That is the whole reason this item exists as a separate reminder. A side-by-side that spends its life on dry, hard-packed trails can go the full interval without drama. One that spends a weekend in a mud park can come home with pads worn to the backing plate.

Mud is abrasive. Fine silt gets between the pad and the disc and stays there, and every application of the brake grinds it against both surfaces. Water washes away whatever protection the pad had and adds rust to the disc surface, which then acts as a further abrasive until it wears off. Sand does the same job faster. The result is pad wear that has nothing to do with how hard you have been braking, which is why the hour meter is a poor guide after a muddy ride.

The inspection starts with the wheels off, on a stand, on level ground. On the disc brakes fitted to every machine on our list, look at the pad thickness through the caliper opening or, better, with the pads out. The minimum pad thickness for your machine is in your service manual. Look at both pads on each caliper; the inner and outer often wear at different rates, and one worn pad with one good one means the caliper is not sliding freely and needs cleaning.

Look at the discs while you are there. Deep scoring, a lip at the outer edge, or a bluish heat tint are all signs of wear or abuse. Measure the disc thickness if you can and compare it to the manual's minimum. A disc that has been run with a pad worn through to the backing plate will usually be scored beyond saving. Rust on the disc after a wet ride is normal and will clean off with the first few stops; rust that pits the surface is not.

Check the caliper slides and pins. On many machines these are the parts that seize after mud, and a seized slide pin drags one pad on the disc constantly, wearing it out and heating the disc. Clean the pins, check the rubber boots for splits, and lubricate them with the grease the manual specifies for the job, which is not the same grease you use on the suspension zerks. Make sure the pads move freely in the caliper bracket and that the bracket itself is not packed with dried mud.

Now the fluid. Look at the reservoir level with the machine level and the cap on. A level that has dropped is often just the pads wearing and the pistons moving out to follow them, but a level that drops between checks with no corresponding pad wear is a leak. Fluid that has gone dark or looks cloudy has absorbed water and should be replaced, using the fluid type in the owner's manual. Do not mix types. Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, which is why the six-month part of the interval exists even on a machine that has hardly been used.

Bleeding after a fluid change or a caliper service follows the sequence in the service manual, which is not the same on every platform. A spongy pedal after a mud ride, with no visible leak, usually means water has got past a seal or air has entered the system, and the fix is a proper bleed. If the pedal goes to the floor, do not ride the machine until you have found out why.

Wash the brakes when you wash the machine, and do it gently. A hose from a distance flushes mud out of the caliper and off the disc without driving it past the seals; a pressure washer aimed at the caliper does the opposite. Roll the machine a few feet and apply the brakes a couple of times on the way to the trailer so the pads clear the discs of standing water and silt before it dries in place.

Replacement pads must match the platform and year. Pads for a Polaris RZR-XP machine of 2014 to 2026 are not the pads for a RZR-PRO of 2020 onward, and a Can-Am DEFENDER platform machine does not share pads with the X3. Check the listing against your own machine before ordering. After a muddy weekend, whatever the hour meter says, pull a wheel and look. Fifty hours is the longest you should go, not a target.
