A packed radiator screen is the most common cause of overheating on a trail machine, and checking it every 25 hours is the simplest job on the schedule.

Our UTV maintenance guidance lists a check of coolant level and radiator screen every 25 hours. Of all the items on that schedule, this is the one that most often gets skipped because the machine is running fine, and the one that most often ends a ride when it has been skipped. A liquid-cooled side-by-side that overheats on a slow climb in summer is almost always the victim of a radiator that cannot pass air, not of a coolant system that has failed.

Start with the screen. Nearly every machine on our list mounts its radiator at the front, behind a grille or a mesh screen that is there to keep sticks and rocks out. Mud, seeds, grass, cottonwood fluff and dust all build up on that screen and in the fins behind it. A layer you can barely see reduces airflow; a layer you can see kills it. Look at the screen with a light from the back, if you can get to it, and from the front. If light does not pass easily, it needs cleaning.

Clean gently. Radiator fins bend with very little pressure and a bent fin is a blocked fin. A soft brush, a garden hose from the back of the radiator pushing the muck out the way it came in, and patience do the job. A pressure washer held close will fold the fins over and make the problem permanent. If a section of fins has already been flattened, a fin comb of the right pitch can straighten them, but it is slow work and better avoided by cleaning more often.

Now the coolant level. With the engine cold, look at the overflow or expansion bottle. It has a minimum and maximum mark; the level should sit between them. Do not open the radiator cap on a warm engine, ever. If the bottle is below the minimum, top it up with the type of coolant your owner's manual specifies, mixed as the manual says. Do not mix types, and do not use plain water as anything other than a get-home measure. The capacity of the system is in your service manual.

A level that keeps dropping between checks is a leak or a pressure cap that is not holding. Look for crusty white or colored deposits at hose joints, around the water pump, at the radiator end tanks and at the cap. Squeeze the hoses when cold; they should be firm, not soft or swollen. A cap that has lost its spring lets the system boil at a lower temperature than it should, and is cheap to replace with the part specified for your machine.

Fans matter as much as the screen. Most side-by-sides in this class have an electric fan that comes on with a temperature switch or under control of the engine management. Listen for it to cycle when the machine has been idling for a few minutes on a warm day. A fan that never comes on, or a fan whose blades are packed with mud, will let the engine climb into the red on the first slow section. Check that nothing has fouled the blades and that the wiring to the fan motor is intact.

Where you ride sets the real interval. The 25-hour number is the normal one. Thick mud, grassy pasture work in a Ranger or Defender, and dusty desert riding all pack a screen far faster than that, and in those conditions the check is really a per-ride item done before loading up for home. Sand is kinder to the screen but harder on the system as a whole, because high revs at low ground speed put a lot of heat into a small radiator with little airflow.

If the machine has an aftermarket radiator relocation or a roof-mounted radiator, as some owners of X3 and RZR platform machines fit for mud riding, the same rules apply with a different access route. Make sure the relocated radiator's hoses are not chafing on the cage and that the coolant lines have no high spots where air can collect. Bleeding a relocated system properly is described in the instructions that came with the kit and in the service manual for the base machine.

None of this is skilled work. It is ten minutes with a flashlight and a brush, and it stops the most common cause of overheating on a trail machine. Put the screen and the bottle on the same list as the air filter and the belt, note the hours when you did it, and look again before 25 hours are up if you have been in mud.
