A used JK and a new JL are not one generation apart in ownership terms, and the desk's recall, problem and parts records show why the cheaper purchase is not always the cheaper vehicle.

The gap between a used Wrangler JK and a new JL is not one generation of Jeep; it is two different ownership propositions with different bills attached. The JK carries platform code JK, built 2007 to 2018; the JL carries platform code JL, built 2018 to 2026. Both sit in the site's SUV class: street-legal, trail-capable, four to seven seats. This is written from published specification and the desk's reference rows rather than from driving either. Because the two platforms overlap at 2018, every recall row and every parts row in this comparison is keyed to the code rather than to the year on the title.

Recall exposure is where the two look most different in our store, and the difference needs an honest caveat. The desk holds eight campaign rows against JK and forty-four against JL. Every JK row we hold carries a 2018 fitment, which reflects how our data was gathered rather than the real exposure of a vehicle built a decade earlier. A buyer looking at an older JK cannot use our count as a guide and has to run the VIN.

The JK rows we do hold are instructive about what to inspect on any example. NHTSA campaign 18V-231 concerns a rear underbody ladder rail that may corrode, reducing the strength of the rear floor pan, with dealers inspecting and coating the rail with rust protection. Campaign 18V-343 concerns an intermediate steering shaft that may not have been properly welded, with dealers inspecting and replacing the shaft as necessary. Rust and steering are the two things to look hardest at on a used JK regardless.

Two more JK rows are narrower but worth knowing. NHTSA campaign 18V-786 concerns a right rear passenger door latch that may not be correctly located, with dealers repairing the latch reinforcement. Campaign 19V-680 concerns right-hand-drive Wranglers whose driver's seat belt buckle mounting strap may fracture and separate from the seat frame. Build variants matter as much as years.

On the JL side, the campaign most relevant to a current buyer is NHTSA 26V-363, which covers 2021 to 2025 Wrangler, Wrangler 4xe and Gladiator vehicles where the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring may overheat and cause a vehicle fire. The remedy recorded against it advises owners to park outside and away from structures until the vehicle is repaired, with dealers inspecting and replacing the wiring and pump as necessary. That is an instruction to act on rather than to file.

Manual-transmission buyers have a specific series to trace. NHTSA campaign 23V-116 covers 2018 to 2023 Wranglers and 2020 to 2023 Gladiators with manual transmissions where the clutch pressure plate may overheat and fracture, with dealers replacing the clutch assembly and updating software. The row notes that it expands and replaces 21V-028, and that vehicles previously repaired under 21V-028 need the new remedy completed. A used JL with a manual gearbox needs that history read carefully, not assumed.

Two structural JL campaigns matter to anyone shopping the early years. NHTSA 18V-675 covers 2018 to 2019 vehicles whose front track bar brackets may be improperly welded, allowing the bracket to separate from the frame. NHTSA 23V-191 covers 2020 to 2022 vehicles where a stud on the frame assembly may puncture the fuel tank in a crash. Both were remedied free of charge, and both are worth confirming as completed rather than presumed.

The owner-reported problems run across both platforms and shape the inspection more than the campaigns do. Death wobble after a lift or with worn front-end parts is recorded against JK and JL alike, described as a violent steering shimmy at highway speed after hitting a bump that only stops when slowing down, caused by a loose or worn track bar bushing, tie rod end or ball joint, often made worse by lift geometry and larger tires.

Water leaks are the second shared entry, recorded against both platforms as wet carpet in the front footwells after rain and drips from the headliner corners, caused by seals at the panel and windshield frame junction shifting while dirt in the channels stops them sealing. One entry lands only on the JK: rear differential and axle seal leaks after wading.

Parts availability favors the newer platform in our rows, though both are well served. The JK rows carry a Rough Country coil-spring lift, a Method Race Wheels 305 NV wheel, a Factor 55 FlatLink, KC HiLiTES FLEX ERA 4 lights and an ARB Air Locker, the only selectable differential lock our rows record against either Wrangler. The JL rows carry all of that except the locker, plus Fox Performance Series shocks, BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires, Rough Country frame-mounted rock sliders and two WARN winches. A build plan on a JK will involve more supplier checks and no fewer options.

Maintenance is identical, because the site resolves SUV intervals to the truck list. Engine oil and filter every 5,000 miles or six months, shortened considerably by dusty trail use. Tires rotated and sidewalls inspected every 5,000 miles. Skid plates and underbody fasteners checked every 5,000 miles. Brakes every 10,000 miles. Steering and suspension joints every 10,000 miles, which is where a lifted Wrangler of either generation shows its history. Differential fluid every 15,000 miles.

Torque values for those fasteners, capacities for those services and pressures for those tires are in the service manual for the specific platform and year, and this site does not publish them. That matters more on a Wrangler than on most vehicles, because the two platforms share a name and a shape without sharing specifications.

Where the money actually goes: a used JK costs less to buy and asks for corrosion inspection, steering and front-end refresh, and axle seal attention, on a platform whose recall history our data represents poorly. A new or newer JL costs more to buy, arrives with campaigns a dealer closes for free, and asks that you actually confirm the steering pump and clutch work has been done. Neither is the cheap option once a lift and tires are involved.
