RZR XP 1000 and Maverick X3: Picking a Desert Machine From the Spec Sheet
Two sport side-by-sides cover most desert shortlists, and the desk's own recall, problem and parts records separate them more usefully than any horsepower argument.

Two of the sport side-by-sides on this site's vehicle list are the ones sized for open desert: the Polaris RZR XP 1000, platform code RZR-XP, built 2014 to 2026, and the Can-Am Maverick X3, platform code X3, built 2017 to 2026. Both are UTVs by the site's class definition, which means two to six seats, rarely plated, recreational off-highway vehicles. What follows comes from published specification and the desk's reference data. Nobody here has driven either one, and a comparison that pretends otherwise is worth less than the fitment rows behind it.
The production ranges are the first practical difference. An RZR XP 1000 shopper has three more model years of used stock to sort through, which usually means a lower entry price and a wider spread of condition. It also means more chassis revisions inside one platform code, so a part or a campaign keyed to an early machine will not necessarily key to a late one. The X3's shorter range makes its used market simpler to read and, on average, younger.
Recall exposure separates them sharply in the desk's records. NHTSA campaign 24V-153 covers the RZR-XP platform for model years 2019 to 2021, where the fuel line may chafe against the frame, and dealers will inspect and reroute the fuel line at no charge. That row carries a stop-ride instruction, the most serious label the desk applies. Anyone shopping a used RZR XP 1000 inside that window should treat written proof of the completed repair as a condition of sale. The store holds no campaign rows against the X3 platform, which describes our records rather than a clean bill of health; a VIN check settles either machine.
Owner-reported problems overlap heavily. Drive belt glazing and failure under sustained load is recorded against both platforms, with a burning rubber smell, slipping or a sudden loss of drive, and belt dust and chunks inside the clutch cover as the reported symptoms. The recorded cause is long stretches of low-speed, high-load running in high range. In deep sand that describes an ordinary afternoon, which is why desert use is the hardest work either machine will be asked to do.
Two more entries land on both. Rear knuckle and wheel bearing wear is recorded for RZR-XP and X3 alike, with oversize tires and wheel spacers multiplying leverage on the hub bearings while mud and water wash the grease out. Torn CV boots and the axle joint failures that follow are recorded on both as well, usually starting with rock or brush damage to a boot. Both problems get worse with the tire sizes desert buyers tend to fit.
Where the records genuinely separate them is the induction plumbing. Loosening intercooler and charge piping clamps appear against the X3 platform, the RZR Pro XP and the F-150 Raptor, and not against the RZR XP. The reported failure is a sudden loss of power under boost with a whoosh and an underboost fault, caused by vibration and heat cycling walking the clamps loose. An X3 buyer should add the charge pipes and their clamps to a pre-ride walk-around.
Parts coverage in the desk's rows is broad for both and not identical. Both carry beadlock wheels from DWT and Method Race Wheels, the Maxxis Carnivore radial, a Factor 55 UltraHook, a Rigid Industries chase light, a Gates G-Force RedLine CVT belt and a Rugged Radios GMR45 kit. The RZR-XP rows add a SandCraft heavy-duty axle set and Pro Armor full doors. The X3 rows add Fox Podium Live Valve shocks, Baja Designs Squadron Pro pods, a SandCraft paddle tire set and a WARN AXON 45 winch.
Read those differences as gaps in our data rather than as facts about the machines. A paddle tire set is listed against the X3 and the RZR Pro XP but not the RZR XP, and a particle separator intake against the two Polaris platforms but not the X3. Confirm fitment with the supplier by platform code and year before ordering anything.
The maintenance ask is the same list for both, because it is set by class rather than by badge. Check and clean the air filter every 25 hours, or every 10 in dust and sand, which is the column desert riders should be reading. Check coolant level and the radiator screen every 25 hours. Inspect the drive belt every 50 hours, and carry a spare with the tools to fit it. Change engine oil and filter every 100 hours or twelve months.
The rest of the class list is brakes every 50 hours or six months, a re-torque of suspension and wheel fasteners every 25 hours, and a lap of every grease zerk every 25 hours. Vibration walks fasteners loose on both machines, and desert hours accumulate that vibration quickly. The torque values for that job, along with fluid capacities and tire pressures, live in the service manual for your platform and model year. The desk does not publish them.
One practical note before either purchase. Width limits, permit requirements, day-use fees and seasonal closures on desert riding areas vary by managing agency and change through the year, so confirm the rules for your intended area with the agency that manages it rather than with a seller. The site's regional guidance for the desert Southwest is blunt about the calendar too: fall through spring, with midsummer daytime riding genuinely dangerous rather than merely uncomfortable.
Put plainly, the RZR XP 1000 offers a longer used market and one documented stop-ride campaign to check for in the 2019 to 2021 window. The Maverick X3 offers a younger used market, charge-pipe hardware to inspect, and no campaign rows in our store at all. Belts, bearings and boots are common to both. Choose on price, on the inspection list you would rather own, and on seat time arranged somewhere other than a comparison article.
