The underside of a side-by-side is where the expensive things live: the engine oil pan, the transmission, the front differential, the fuel tank and the CV boots. The factory covers them with thin plastic that is fine on a groomed trail and gone after one season of rocks. A skid plate is the upgrade that decides whether a rock strike costs a scuff or a tow. The choice comes down to material, coverage and, more than most owners expect, how it is fastened.

There are two materials in common use. Aluminum is stiff, resists puncture well, and takes a dent that stays; on a hard hit it can also transfer the shock into the frame mounts. Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, usually called UHMW, is a thick, slippery plastic that flexes, absorbs impact and slides over rock rather than catching on it. The SuperATV Full Skid Plate listed for the Defender HD10 (DEFENDER, 2016–2026) and Ranger XP 1000 (RANGER-XP, 2017–2026) is a UHMW belly plate, and the maker describes its selling point exactly that way: it slides over rocks instead of catching on them.

The plastic is heavier for the same coverage than aluminum and it is thick, so it costs some ground clearance. On a rock-crawling machine that trade is usually right, because a plate that slides gets the machine over the ledge and a plate that catches stops it dead and bends the mounts. On a high-speed desert machine that mostly sees whoops and the occasional rock, a lighter aluminum plate is often the better choice. There is no universal answer; match the material to the terrain you spend most hours in.

Coverage is the next decision. A full belly plate runs from the front bumper to the rear of the frame and protects the drivetrain and fuel tank. It is the main event. After that come a-arm guards, which wrap the lower arms and protect the CV boots and ball joints from rocks that come in from the side; trailing arm guards on the rear of sport machines; and rock sliders along the rocker area. The Assault Industries Rock Sliders for the Talon 1000R (TALON, 2019–2026) and Teryx KRX 1000 (KRX, 2020–2026) cover that last area, protecting the lower door and rocker on machines that lean into obstacles.

CV boots deserve a specific word. The fault we track as CV boot tears and axle joint failure covers the X3 (2017–2026), RZR-XP (2014–2026), TALON and YXZ (2016–2026) platforms, and a torn boot is usually a rock through the side rather than wear. A-arm guards are the upgrade for that, and they are cheap next to an axle. Look for a design that leaves the zerks accessible, because guards that have to be removed to grease the joints will not be removed and the joints will not be greased.

A plate is only as good as what it bolts to. Most full plates mount to the frame rails with a mix of factory threaded points and supplied brackets, and the thin factory threads will not take repeated shock loads. Where the kit supplies through-bolts and backing plates, use them; where it relies on the factory points, fit them with a thread locker the plate maker recommends. Every fastener has a value in the instructions and the service manual. Do not guess it, and do not let a plate that catches on a rock pull a stripped insert out of the frame.

Then keep checking them. The class schedule calls for re-torquing suspension and wheel fasteners about every 25 hours, and the plate bolts belong on that list. Rock strikes bend mounts and shear bolts, and a plate hanging by half its fasteners is worse than no plate: it snags, it fills with mud and it rattles. Carry spares of the plate bolts in the trail kit, and a driver for them. Inspect the plate itself for cracks at the mounting holes, which is where aluminum fails, and for deep gouges that have thinned the plastic on a UHMW plate.

Heat and mud are the two hidden costs of a full belly plate. A plate seals the underside, so heat from the engine and exhaust has fewer places to go, which on sport machines adds to the cabin heat soak we track on the X3, RZR-XP and KRX. Plates with cutouts or louvres near the exhaust help. Mud packs between the plate and the frame and never dries; after a wet ride, pull the plate or hose through it from the sides, and check that drain holes are clear so the pocket above the plate does not hold water against the frame.

Two final points before you buy. First, confirm the plate clears any lift kit, aftermarket a-arms or a relocated radiator you have fitted or plan to; the mounting points move and a plate listed for the stock machine may not fit a lifted one. Second, check that the plate does not block access to the oil drain and filter, because a drain that means dropping a heavy plate is a drain that gets skipped past the 100-hour interval the class schedule sets for engine oil. A well-designed plate has an access hatch; if yours does not, mark the bolt that needs to come out and keep that one clean.
