Sand Tires and Beadlock Wheels for Dune Side-by-Sides
Paddles, ribs and beadlocks change how a sport UTV floats over sand, and each brings a cost in wear, weight and drivetrain load.

Sand rewards two things: a large, soft contact patch and a tread that scoops rather than claws. The stock all-purpose tire on a sport UTV is a compromise for hardpack, rock and mud, and it does none of that well in loose dunes. The two upgrades that address it are a dedicated sand tire and a wheel that lets you run that tire softer than a standard rim will safely allow. They are best thought of as a pair, though plenty of riders start with one.
A paddle tire replaces the rear tread with a row of raised scoops that dig and throw sand. The front gets a ribbed tire with one or more circumferential ridges that steer by slicing into the surface rather than by tread friction. The SandCraft Paddle Tire Set is listed for the X3 (2017–2026) and RZR-PRO (2020–2026) platforms and is described as dune-specific paddle rears with ribbed fronts. Its maker is clear about what it is for, and so should you be: paddles are miserable on hardpack, wear fast on gravel roads, and are not a tire to drive back to camp on across rock.
The Maxxis Carnivore 32in tire, listed for the RZR-XP (2014–2026), RZR-PRO, X3 and KRX (2020–2026) platforms, is the opposite case. It is a radial with a stiff sidewall built for rocks and hardpack. It will get you through sand, especially with a beadlock allowing lower pressure, but it will not float the way a paddle does. If your dune weekends are occasional and the rest of the year is desert two-track, a tire like this on beadlocks is the more sensible single set.
That brings us to the wheel. Airing down is the cheapest sand upgrade there is, but a standard wheel relies on air pressure to hold the tire bead against the rim. Below a certain point the bead can roll off under a side load, and in sand that side load comes every time you carve a bowl. A beadlock wheel clamps the outer bead between the rim and a bolted ring so pressure is no longer what keeps the tire on. The DWT 15in Beadlock Wheel is listed for the RZR-XP (2014–2026) and X3 (2017–2026) and its maker describes exactly that benefit: low pressure in sand without unseating a bead.
The Method Race Wheels 401 Beadlock UTV Wheel covers a wider spread: RZR-XP, RZR-PRO, X3, TALON (2019–2026) and YXZ (2016–2026). It is a true beadlock rather than a wheel with a simulated ring, which matters because the decorative kind offers none of the retention. Whatever pressure you settle on for the dunes, it is a number to work out for your tire, your machine and its load, and the starting point is the value in your service manual, not a forum post.
Beadlocks have obligations. The ring bolts are many, small, and they loosen. They need to be checked before every sand trip and re-torqued to the wheel maker's value, in the pattern the maker specifies, because an uneven ring can pinch the bead or let it weep. Tire shops will often refuse to mount or balance a beadlock, so plan to do it yourself or find a powersports shop that will. The wheels are heavier than cast alloys, and that unsprung weight is felt in the steering and in the axles.
Axles are the hidden cost of any sand setup. Paddles hook up hard, the machine is heavier with bigger wheels, and a dune face asks for full throttle from a stop. The SandCraft Heavy-Duty Axle Set for the RZR-XP (2014–2026) is described by its maker as a common upgrade after a stock axle failure in sand, which tells you the order most owners do things in. Doing the axles before the failure is cheaper than a tow off the dunes. The same brand lists a heavy-duty axle set for the TALON, YXZ and RMAX platforms.
The drive belt is the other component sand punishes. Paddles load the CVT harder than any other tire, and the fine dust gets everywhere. The Gates G-Force RedLine belt, listed for the X3, RZR-XP, RZR-PRO and KRX, is sold as a high-temperature belt for hard sand. Regardless of brand, carry a spare, check the clutch cover seal, and inspect the belt on the interval in your schedule; the class guidance is about every 50 hours and dune hours count double.
Larger and heavier wheel and tire packages also load wheel bearings and rear knuckles, a wear pattern we track on the RZR-XP, X3 and KRX. Grab the top of each rear tire after a sand weekend and rock it; play that was not there before is a bearing on its way out. Grease every zerk after a trip, because sand mixed with old grease is an abrasive paste.
A last word on the land. Dunes that allow motorized use commonly require a whip flag and may have seasonal closures, permit fees or vehicle registration rules that differ from the surrounding area. Confirm with the managing agency before you go, and ride within the boundaries shown on its current map.
