Rock Sliders, Skid Plates and Bumpers: Armor for Trail Trucks and SUVs

Underbody armor is the upgrade that pays for itself the first time a rock finds the rocker panel, provided it is mounted to the frame and inspected.

Armor is unglamorous. It adds weight, it costs money, and on a good day it does nothing at all. The reason it sits near the top of most build lists for a rock-trail vehicle is that the panels it protects are the ones that are expensive to repair and impossible to repair on the trail: the rocker panels under the doors, the oil pan and transmission, the transfer case, the fuel tank and the lower radiator. This guide covers the three pieces most trucks and SUVs in our list receive, in the order most owners fit them.

Rock sliders come first because the rocker panel is the part most likely to be hit and the least protected from the factory. On a Jeep Wrangler JL (JL, 2018–2026), Wrangler JK (JK, 2007–2018) or Gladiator JT (JT, 2020–2026), the body sits on the frame with a gap between them, and the factory side steps bolt to the body and fold under load. A proper slider bolts to the frame, extends outboard far enough to take a hit before the body does. The Rough Country Rock Sliders for JT and JL are listed as frame-mounted steel sliders that double as a step.

On the Ford Bronco (U725, 2021–2026), Toyota 4Runner (N280, 2010–2026), Tacoma (N300, 2016–2026) and Colorado ZR2 (ZR2, 2017–2026), the same principle applies but the mounting is different because the body and frame relationship differs. Sliders for these platforms usually bolt to the frame rail through the factory holes or weld on. Bolt-on is reversible and does not need a welder; weld-on is stronger and lighter at the mount. The Gladiator's long wheelbase makes its rocker particularly exposed on breakover, and the Tacoma's rear frame rails are already a rust concern our repairs database logs against N300 and N280, so check the mounting area for corrosion before drilling anything.

Skid plates come second. Factory plates on higher trims are usually thin stamped steel or plastic, adequate for gravel and not for a rock that lifts the front of the vehicle. Aftermarket plates cover the oil pan, transmission, transfer case and sometimes the fuel tank as a set, in steel or aluminum. Steel is heavier and takes repeated hits without cracking; aluminum is lighter and dents. The maintenance schedule for trucks and SUVs sets a check of skid plates and underbody fasteners every five thousand miles, because rock strikes bend mounts and shear bolts.

Bumpers are third, and they are where armor overlaps with recovery. A steel front bumper protects the lower radiator and the corners, provides a place to mount a winch and recovery points, and on some designs improves the approach angle by cutting the factory plastic back. The ARB Summit Bull Bar for the N280 is listed in our parts records as a winch-capable steel front bumper with animal-strike protection. The WARN VR EVO 10-S Winch for JL and JT is noted as requiring a winch-capable bumper, which is the reason the bumper is chosen first and the winch second.

Weight is the hidden cost of armor, and it adds up quickly. A steel front bumper, winch, sliders and a full skid plate set add a substantial amount of weight, most of it low but much of it forward of the front axle. The front springs sag, ride height drops, and the vehicle noses down under braking. On a coil-sprung Jeep the fix is heavier front springs, and the lift kit chosen for tire clearance may need re-specifying. On the independent-front-suspension trucks the coilovers may need heavier springs, and the control arm and ball joint wear our repairs database logs against N280, ZR2 and U725 gets worse with weight.

Vehicles with active safety systems have a further consideration. The Bronco and later Jeeps carry radar and camera sensors in the front bumper area, and NHTSA campaign 21V-982 covers certain 2021 Bronco vehicles for the angle of the cruise control radar module. An aftermarket bumper that relocates or obscures the sensor can disable adaptive cruise and collision warning; choose one designed for the sensor, and have any open campaign completed before the bumper goes on. Check nhtsa.gov for current status.

Mounting is what separates armor that works from armor that looks the part. Sliders and plates must attach to the frame, not the body; a body-mounted plate transfers a rock strike into the floor and the door gaps. Every fastener is a structural one, and the values are in the manufacturer's instructions and your service manual, not here. Use the grade of bolt the kit specifies, use thread locker where the instructions call for it, and re-check them after the first trail day, when the plates have settled and the paint under the washers has crushed.

Do not forget the underside of the plates themselves. Mud and water trapped between a skid plate and the frame do not dry out, and the steel corrodes from the back where you cannot see it. After a wet trip, pull the plates or at least hose behind them, and on the Tacoma and 4Runner treat the frame behind the armor with a wax-based coating. On an early JL there is a related recall: NHTSA campaign 18V-231 covers certain 2018 Wrangler vehicles for the rear underbody, with dealers inspecting and coating the affected area free of charge. Have that done before armor hides the frame.

Choose armor for the terrain you actually drive. A forest-road vehicle in the Pacific Northwest needs a decent skid set and probably not sliders; a rock vehicle for Moab or the Rubicon needs sliders before anything else; a desert truck needs a strong front plate and a fuel tank guard. Stay on designated routes regardless of what is bolted underneath; confirm route status with the managing agency before you go. Tread Lightly principles apply.
