Regearing is the upgrade nobody photographs and everybody who has done it recommends. When a vehicle moves from the factory tire to a taller one, every gear in the drivetrain effectively becomes taller too, because the tire covers more ground per revolution. The engine turns slower for the same road speed, the transmission spends more time hunting between gears, and the crawl ratio in low range gets worse. Replacing the ring and pinion sets in the axles with a numerically higher ratio undoes that, and returns the vehicle to something close to how it drove when new.

The symptoms are consistent across platforms. On the highway, an automatic transmission that used to hold top gear drops down on every grade and locks and unlocks its converter constantly. A manual feels like it has lost a gear. Towing runs hot. Fuel economy, which many owners expect to improve because the engine turns slower, usually gets worse, because the engine spends its time out of its efficient range and the transmission spends its time in a lower gear. On the trail, low range no longer crawls, and the vehicle wants to be driven on the brakes down ledges it used to walk down.

The factory ratio depends on the trim, and that is the first thing to establish. On the Jeep Wrangler JL (JL, 2018–2026), Wrangler JK (JK, 2007–2018) and Gladiator JT (JT, 2020–2026), the axle ratio varies by trim and option package, with Rubicon trims and towing packages carrying numerically higher gears than the base vehicle. The Toyota Tacoma (N300, 2016–2026) and 4Runner (N280, 2010–2026) vary by engine and drive configuration. The Ford Bronco (U725, 2021–2026) and Colorado ZR2 (ZR2, 2017–2026) vary by trim. The ratio is on the axle tag, the build sheet or the door jamb code, and it is the number the new ratio is chosen against.

The new ratio is a calculation, not a guess. The aim is to multiply the factory ratio by the change in tire diameter, so that engine speed at a given road speed lands close to what it was on the factory tire. Owners moving from a factory 32 or 33 to a 35 typically land one or two ratio steps higher; owners on 37s land further. The wrong direction is easy to get with careless arithmetic, and a ratio that is too tall for the transmission's overdrive or too short for the highway is expensive to correct. The parts suppliers and most gear shops publish calculators; use two.

Regearing is not a driveway job for most people. Setting up a ring and pinion means establishing pinion depth and backlash with shims and reading the contact pattern with marking compound, and the tolerances are fine. A set that is close but not right will whine and then fail. The bearing preload and the fastener torque are in the service manual; we do not publish them, and a shop that quotes them from memory is a shop to be cautious of. Budget for new bearings, seals, crush sleeves or solid spacers, and an installation kit, and for the fluid, whose capacity and specification are in your service manual.

The Jeep JL, JT and JK have solid axles front and rear, and both need regearing to the same ratio or the transfer case will bind in four-wheel drive. The independent-front-suspension platforms have a front differential in a housing bolted to the subframe and a solid rear, and the same rule applies: both ends must match. On the 4Runner and Tacoma the front differential is a compact unit that some shops find fiddly; on the ZR2 the factory front is a small unit that is often regeared as a matched set with the rear. The Bronco's front and rear also must match.

Regearing is the natural time for a locker. Our parts records list the ARB Air Locker for N300 and, separately, for JK, N280 and ZR2, and the locker replaces the differential carrier, which is exactly the part that comes out during a regear. Doing both at once saves the setup cost of opening the axle twice. The same applies to axle shaft upgrades and bearing replacements on a vehicle that has had a hard life; our repairs database logs rear differential and axle seal leaks after wading against N300, N280 and JK, and a regear is the moment to replace every seal in there.

The electronics need to know. Whether your platform allows recalibration through the dealer tool or needs an aftermarket module is a question for the dealer or the module maker, but the tire size and axle ratio the vehicle works from must be updated or the speedometer, odometer, transmission shift points and stability control will all be working from the wrong figures. This is not optional: a transmission shifting on the wrong assumptions wears itself, and a stability control system that thinks the wheels are going faster than they are will intervene at the wrong moments.

One recall in our records touches this area. NHTSA campaign 19V-636 covers certain 2020 Gladiator JT vehicles for the rear driveshaft, with dealers replacing the driveshaft free of charge. A regear does not affect the campaign, but the driveshaft comes out during the job, and if the campaign has not been completed on your vehicle it is a good time to ask the dealer to do it before the new gears go under load. Check nhtsa.gov for the current status of any campaign.

After the regear, treat the axles as new. Most gear manufacturers specify a break-in period of gentle driving and no towing, followed by an early fluid change to flush the metal from the initial bedding; the specific schedule is in the gear set's instructions. After that, the maintenance schedule's differential fluid check every fifteen thousand miles applies, and sooner after any water crossing. A regear done well is invisible, which is the point; the vehicle drives like it did on the factory tire, only it now clears the rocks it could not before.
