Recall roundup: fuel pump, fuel line and battery campaigns on Jeep JL and JT

Mid-July is the wrong time to have an open fuel-system recall, so this week's roundup collects the ones on the site's Jeep list. None carries a stop-drive instruction, but all of them involve fuel or high-voltage components, and heat makes every one of those worse. The four below cover diesel and plug-in hybrid Wranglers and Gladiators built since 2020, so the odds that at least one applies to a truck in your driveway are not small.

The widest is NHTSA 22V-767, on the high-pressure fuel pump of diesel-engined 2020 through 2022 Wrangler JL and 2021 through 2022 Gladiator JT. Dealers will replace the pump and inspect and replace additional fuel system components as necessary, free of charge. A high-pressure pump that fails usually stalls the engine without warning, and it can do so at speed. That is dangerous on a highway and merely stranding on a trail, but either way the fix is free and the vehicle should not be on a long trip with it outstanding.

A second diesel pump campaign followed. NHTSA 23V-263 covers the diesel high-pressure fuel pump on 2021 through 2023 Wrangler JL and Gladiator JT, with dealers replacing the pump and additional components as necessary and letters mailed in October of the year it was filed. Diesel Gladiators are popular as overlanding trucks precisely because of their range, which is exactly why a pump failure a long way from a dealer is worth avoiding.

Older and narrower is NHTSA 21V-665, on the fuel supply line of 2020 Wrangler JL vehicles. Dealers inspect and replace the line as needed; letters went out in September 2021. A 2020 Wrangler is now several owners deep in some cases, and a recall from 2021 is easy to have missed. It is a cheap check.

The battery campaign is NHTSA 25V-741, on the traction battery of 2020 through 2025 Wrangler JL 4xe. Until the remedy is done, owners are told to park outside and away from structures and not to charge the vehicle. A high-voltage battery is a fire risk of a different character from a fuel leak, because it can start while the vehicle is parked and switched off. If you own a 4xe and have not had the software update, the parking advice is not optional.

Heat and fuel interact in ways owners forget. A fuel line that is marginal at spring temperatures may weep in a Desert Southwest July, and the first sign is usually a smell at the fuel stop rather than a puddle. Sniff around the engine bay and under the vehicle after a hot run. On UTVs the same applies to the tank vent and the lines over the engine, which sit in the hottest air on the machine.

The other summer fire risk is the one nobody recalls: dry grass packed into a skid plate or a belly pan. Trucks and SUVs on this site's reminder list have skid plates and underbody fasteners on a five-thousand-mile check, but in July it is worth looking underneath after every trail day. Grass against an exhaust will smolder for a long time before anyone notices, sometimes after the vehicle is parked at home.

For UTV and ATV owners, the engine oil reminder is a hundred hours or twelve months, and the note on this site is that short, hot, low-speed running loads the oil harder than highway miles do. Carry the right extinguisher, too. A small vehicle extinguisher mounted within reach of the driver's seat is cheap insurance on a machine that is a long way from any fire crew. Mount it where it cannot become a projectile in a rollover, check the gauge each season, and know that a fuel or battery fire is one you fight from a distance and then walk away from if it grows.
