Rear frame rust on the Tacoma and 4Runner: how to check before it perforates

Frame corrosion on the rear rails is a recurring entry in the desk's problem records for the N300 Tacoma platform from 2016 to 2026 and the N280 4Runner platform from 2010 to 2026. The symptom that brings owners to it is usually seen rather than felt: flaking scale on the frame behind the cab, rust staining on the underside of the bed or cargo floor, and in advanced cases a soft spot that gives when poked with a screwdriver. By the time the truck feels different to drive, the damage is serious.
The cause is the boxed section of the rear frame. A closed box traps moisture that gets in through drain holes and seams, and once salt from winter roads or beach sand is inside it stays wet far longer than the outside does. Where the factory coating on the inside is thin or missing, corrosion works from the inside out, which is why the outside can look acceptable until a large area of scale lifts at once.
Confirming the condition is a job for a lift, a wire brush and a small hammer or an awl. Clean a patch of the rail behind the rear cab mount and around the rear spring hangers, then tap it. Sound metal rings; rotten metal thuds or gives. Probe the drain holes and the seams where the crossmembers meet the rails, because those are the entry points. Look inside the rails with a flashlight through the access holes. If a probe goes through, or if the metal flexes, stop and get a professional assessment before the vehicle carries a load.
A fix depends on what is found. Surface scale with sound metal underneath is treated: brush or blast back to clean metal, treat with a rust converter, prime, and coat, then inject a cavity wax inside the rails so the inside is protected too. Localized perforation can be repaired by a competent fabricator who cuts out the rot and welds in new plate, but the repair must restore the original section and any welding near fuel lines, brake lines or the tank needs those moved first. Widespread perforation is a frame replacement, which is a major job.
Whatever the repair, the mounts matter more than the rails between them. Spring hangers, shock mounts, the rear cab mounts and the bumper and hitch mounts all carry load into the frame, and corrosion around them is where failure actually happens. Check those areas first and most carefully. Fastener torque values for anything removed during the work are in your service manual; do not reuse fasteners that have lost section to rust.
Prevention is about keeping the inside of the rails dry and coated. Wash the underside after salt or beach use, and make sure the drain holes are open so water leaves rather than pools. An annual cavity wax through the access holes is cheap insurance on any truck that sees winter roads. Owners in dry regions are not immune. A truck that lives in the desert but was bought from a northern state can arrive with rot already inside the rails, and beach driving does more damage per mile than salted roads because the sand holds brine against the metal. When buying a used Tacoma or 4Runner, a frame inspection on a lift is the single most useful check you can pay for.
