This is the most-reported problem on the two Polaris platforms the desk tracks most closely, the RZR-XP chassis from 2014 to 2026 and the RANGER-XP chassis from 2017 to 2026. The pattern in the reports is consistent: a hot rubber smell first, then a belt that slips under throttle, and finally a bang from the clutch cover and a machine that revs but does not move. When the cover comes off there is belt dust everywhere and a shredded belt or the remains of one wrapped around the secondary.
The cause is heat, and the heat comes from how the machine was being used. A CVT belt is only happy when the clutches are turning fast enough to move air through the housing. Long stretches of crawling in high range, towing or pushing a heavy load at walking pace, or rocking a stuck machine back and forth all put the belt under high load while the primary is barely spinning. The belt slips a little, the friction faces glaze, the slip gets worse, and the temperature runs away.
Confirming the diagnosis is straightforward. Take the clutch cover off with the machine cold and look at the belt. A glazed belt has shiny, hard-looking sidewalls and often a faint blue tint from heat. A failed belt shows missing cogs, a frayed edge, or a section that has delaminated. Look at the sheave faces too: a dark ring of baked rubber on the primary or secondary means the belt was slipping for a while before it gave up. Also check the intake and exhaust ducts for the housing, because a duct packed with mud or a cracked boot starves the clutch of cooling air.
A fix usually involves a new belt and a thorough clean of the clutch housing and both sheaves. Rubber deposits should come off the sheave faces before the new belt goes on, otherwise the new belt glazes in the first hour. Belt deflection and any alignment check should be done to the values in your service manual. If the old belt threw chunks hard enough to crack the cover or damage the ducts, those need replacing too, because a leaking housing will overheat the next belt as well.
Where a belt has failed more than once on the same machine, look past the belt. Worn primary weights or a sticking secondary helix change the shift-out point and keep the belt in a high-slip condition longer than it should be. Water in the housing after a crossing will glaze a belt within minutes. A belt that has been allowed to sit slack in low humidity can also take a set. Any of these will keep eating belts until they are dealt with.
Prevention is mostly about gear selection and airflow. Use low range for anything slow and heavy, including towing, plowing, deep mud, and rock work. Low range spins the belt faster for the same ground speed and keeps the clutches in a range where they stay cool. If the machine has been stuck and rocked, stop and let the housing cool before trying again. Keep the clutch ducts clear and inspect the boots for cracks at every wash.
The site's UTV service reminders call for a drive belt inspection every 50 hours, and the note on that item is worth repeating: a belt that lets go on the trail usually takes the cover with it, so carry a spare belt and the tools to change it. On both platforms the change is doable trailside with a basic kit, and a spare in the glovebox is far cheaper than a tow out of a canyon.
