A model name is a marketing decision. A platform code is an engineering one. The Wrangler has been called the Wrangler for decades, but the machine sold under that name has been rebuilt from the ground up several times, and each rebuild carries its own internal code. The JK ran from 2007 to 2018; the JL began in 2018 and continues. Two vehicles with the same badge and adjacent model years can share almost no parts, which is why the code matters more than the year on the title.

Manufacturers assign these codes for their own purposes: to identify a body and chassis design through engineering, production and parts supply. Jeep uses two-letter codes like JK, JL and JT, the last being the Gladiator pickup built on the JL architecture from 2020. When a recall is described in the press as affecting 'the Wrangler', the filing behind it names a platform and a date range, and a machine outside that range is not affected however similar it looks. Reading the code in the filing rather than the headline saves owners a wasted trip to the dealer.

The practical habit is to learn your machine's code and use it. It is in the service manual, often on the build plate or in the VIN's structure, and on the manufacturer's parts site. When searching for parts, search by code first and year second. When reading a recall or a bulletin, check the platform before the year. When selling, list the code in the advertisement, because an informed buyer will ask for it and an uninformed one will benefit from it.

When a code appears in a discussion but not on the maker's site, treat it as a nickname rather than a fitment key, and fall back to the platform and year range the manufacturer publishes. The point of a code is precision, and a code nobody in the supply chain recognizes gives none.
