Anyone who has bought parts for a Wrangler learns quickly to lead with the code rather than the year. The lesson is right and incomplete. A platform code is a coarse bucket, and on this site's own vehicle list several of those buckets hold more than one distinctly different machine. The year range is not decoration attached to the code. It is doing real work, and at a changeover between generations it is doing most of the work on its own.

Start with how a model year is declared, because it is a manufacturer's designation rather than a calendar fact. Production of a new year commonly starts months before the year it is named for, and a maker can end one year and begin the next whenever the line changes over. The consequence is that a machine's model year and its build date are two different pieces of information, and a campaign or a fitment cut by build date will not line up neatly with either of them.

That produces overlap years. The Wrangler JK ran from 2007 to 2018 and the JL from 2018, so a 2018 Wrangler is one or the other depending on which line built it. The desk's recall store shows what this does to records: campaigns 18V-231, 18V-786 and 18V-343 each appear against both JK and JL for 2018, because the published population is a set of builds and the platform question has to be answered one machine at a time.

The opposite case is a code that is too coarse. The Ford F-150 Raptor sits on this site as RAPTOR from 2010 to 2026, which is a lineage rather than a single truck, and the Toyota 4Runner sits as N280 from 2010 to 2026. A parts row keyed to those codes alone would be close to meaningless. What makes such a row usable is the year range beside it, which is why the site's own parts records always carry both and never a bare code.

Then there is the code that is too narrow. Architecture is shared across model names more often than the badges suggest, and the Gladiator JT from 2020 was built on the Wrangler JL's underpinnings. The recall store reflects it plainly: 21V-028 lists JL 2018 through 2021 beside JT 2020 through 2021, 23V-116 lists JL 2018 through 2023 beside JT 2020 through 2023, and 26V-363 lists both platforms together for 2021 through 2025. A part or a campaign naming only one of the pair may still be relevant to the other, and the filing rather than the headline is where to check.

Powersports codes have the same problem with less discipline behind them. This site tracks the Polaris RZR XP 1000 as RZR-XP from 2014 to 2026 and the KTM 350 EXC-F as EXC from 2012 to 2026. Both spans cover substantial revisions the manufacturer never renamed. The code earns its place by separating machines that share a name and share nothing else. It is not a promise that everything inside the span is interchangeable with everything else in it.

There is a second-order problem with codes an owner meets on a forum rather than in a parts system. Enthusiast shorthand travels faster than a manufacturer's own designation and does not always match it, so a code that everyone in a thread recognizes may return nothing on the maker's site. Where that happens, treat the forum code as a nickname and fall back to the platform and year range the manufacturer publishes, because a code the supply chain does not recognize gives none of the precision a code exists to give.

The practical test for a fitment claim has three parts rather than one. Does it name a platform code. Does it give a year range, either narrower than the platform's full production run or explicitly covering all of it. And does it say anything about a build date where a mid-year change is plausible. A claim that passes all three has been researched. A claim naming a model and a year is a starting point for a question, not an answer to one.

For an owner the work is small and it pays repeatedly. Learn the code, note the build date from the plate, and keep both alongside the photograph of the identifier. Search by code first and year second, and bring the build date out when a listing hedges. When reading a recall, read the population in the filing rather than the model name in the headline, because the filing is where overlap years are resolved and the headline is where they get lost.
