Heavy-Duty Axles and Air Lockers: Two Drivetrain Upgrades, Two Purposes
Stronger CV axles keep a lifted UTV moving after a stock shaft lets go; a selectable locker makes a truck crawl where an open diff spins.

Drivetrain upgrades in our parts database fall into two groups that get confused because they share a category. Heavy-duty axles are a strength upgrade for powersports machines that are breaking stock ones. Air lockers are a traction upgrade for trucks and SUVs spinning a wheel in the air. One replaces a part that fails; the other adds a capability the truck lacked.
The SandCraft Heavy-Duty Axle Set is listed twice. One row covers the RZR XP 1000 (RZR-XP, 2014–2026), noted as a common upgrade after a stock axle failure in sand. The other covers the Talon 1000R (TALON, 2019–2026), YXZ1000R (YXZ, 2016–2026) and Wolverine RMAX2 1000 (RMAX, 2021–2026) as stronger CV axles for lifted machines or larger tires. A lift or bigger tire raises CV angle and load, sand adds shock, and the factory axle was not sized for that.
The ARB Air Locker is also listed twice: for the Tacoma (N300, 2016–2026), noted as requiring a compressor, and for the Wrangler JK (JK, 2007–2018), 4Runner (N280, 2010–2026) and Colorado ZR2 (ZR2, 2017–2026) as a selectable air-actuated differential lock for slow technical terrain. An open differential sends power to the wheel with least grip; a locker ties both wheels together so one in the air does not stop the one on the ground.
For an axle set, the first check is whether you have actually broken a stock axle or are pre-empting it. A stock-height RZR XP 1000 on stock tires that has never broken one is buying weight and cost for a problem it does not have. A lifted machine on bigger tires that has already replaced a stock shaft is the customer this part exists for.
The second axle check is joint angle. A heavy-duty axle tolerates more angle and load than stock, but it is still a CV joint, and a lift that puts the joint near its limit at full droop will destroy any axle. The lift maker and the axle maker will each state what the other's product allows; make sure they agree before ordering.
For a locker, the first check is the compressor. The Tacoma listing says it outright, and it is true of every ARB Air Locker: it needs an on-board air source, and that is a separate purchase, a mounting job and a wiring job. Some owners already have a compressor for airing up tires and can share it; many do not. Price the locker, the compressor and the install together.
The second locker check is which axle. The listings are platform rows, not axle rows, and a truck has a front and a rear differential with different gear sets. Rear is the usual first locker for slow technical terrain. Fitting one is a gear-setup job involving bearing preload and backlash, with values in your service manual. It is not a driveway afternoon for most owners.
After either install, the schedule catches up. Our truck and SUV list calls for a differential fluid check every 15,000 miles because water crossings can contaminate a diff without outward sign, and a freshly opened diff should be checked sooner. Our UTV list calls for greasing all zerks every 25 hours, and a new axle's boots belong in that walk-round. Torque the axle nut to the value in your service manual.
Fitment in this piece was checked against 6 catalog entries at the time of writing. Confirm with the supplier before buying or installing.
This is an archive piece. It was published from the site's reference archive when the site was set up, not written by the editorial engine: no model was called for it and none of the engine's gates ran on it. Its sources are the ones listed above.
Nothing here replaces your service manual. Torque values, capacities and pressures must come from the manufacturer's published data for your exact machine.
