Harnesses, Doors and Cab Protection for Side-by-Side Owners
Full doors and a four-point harness are two of the most useful safety upgrades a UTV can get, provided they are mounted the way their makers intend.

A side-by-side keeps its occupants inside a roll cage, and everything about surviving a rollover depends on staying inside that cage. The factory three-point belt and half doors are a starting point. The two upgrades owners most often make first, a harness and full doors, both exist to close the gaps: a harness holds the torso and shoulders in the seat, and a full door keeps limbs, mud and rocks where they belong. Neither is complicated, but both are only as good as their mounting.
Start with the doors, because they are the simpler decision. Half doors leave an opening at hip level that the outboard arm and leg naturally drift toward, and they let mud, gravel and branches into the cab at speed. The Pro Armor Full Doors are listed for the RZR XP 1000 (RZR-XP, 2014–2026) and are described by the maker as aluminum full-height doors intended to keep mud and rocks out of the cab. Look for a latch that can be worked from inside and out with a gloved hand, and hinges that do not rely on the original half-door pins alone.
Full doors also protect the door area from below. On machines where the lower door and rocker sit close to the trail, a slider takes the hit before the door does. The Assault Industries Rock Sliders listed for the Talon 1000R (TALON, 2019–2026) and Teryx KRX 1000 (KRX, 2020–2026) are steel tree kickers that protect exactly that lower door and rocker area. Doors and sliders together mean a slide into a stump ends with a scuff rather than a door hanging off its hinges.
Now the harness. A four-point harness has two lap straps and two shoulder straps that meet at a single release. A five-point adds a crotch strap that stops the lap belt riding up in a frontal impact, which is the failure mode of a four-point that is worn loose. Either is a large improvement over a three-point belt in a rollover, because the shoulder straps stop the torso rotating out of the seat. The lap belt must sit low across the hips and be tight enough that you cannot slide a fist under it.
Mounting is where harness installs go wrong. Shoulder straps need to anchor at or slightly below shoulder height behind the seat, to a bar or mount designed for the load, and never to a point far below the shoulders where a crash would compress the spine. The lap straps should anchor to the factory belt points or to mounts the harness maker specifies for the platform. Anchor bolts and their fasteners have specified values in the harness instructions and the service manual; they are not fasteners to run in by feel.
A harness is not the whole system. The seat has to hold the harness in position, which means the shoulder straps pass through slots in the seat back rather than over the top of it. Many factory seats have no slots, and some aftermarket suspension seats are shaped for one style of harness only. Buy the seat and the harness as a matched pair when you can. Add a harness pad if the straps cross a collarbone hard, and a head restraint if the seat has none, because a harness holds the body still while the head keeps moving.
A harness that is fitted properly is also a harness that is inconvenient. Getting in and out takes longer, the straps need adjusting for each driver, and a passenger who does not tighten theirs is barely better off than with no harness at all. That is the trade, and it is worth naming so that an owner who rides mostly at low speed on flat farm tracks does not feel obliged to make it. A properly worn factory belt beats a loose harness.
Check the factory belt regardless. A latch that does not click home every time is a fault, not a quirk, and a used machine may be carrying safety work that nobody told the current owner about. Search your serial number on the CPSC recalls page and with the machine's maker before you rely on a factory belt, and have anything outstanding done at a dealer before the next ride. While you are there, look over the webbing and the buckle for cuts, fraying and packed grit.
Whatever you fit, it has to work with a helmet and with the cage. Sit in the machine helmeted and belted, and check that your head clears the cage and roof with room to spare and that your arms cannot reach outside the door line with the harness tight. If either fails, the fix is seat position or a lower seat, not a looser strap. Then check the harness webbing and the door latches each time you check the drive belt, which for this class is about every 50 hours; sun and mud age both.
