Cell coverage ends at most trailheads, and a group of side-by-sides in dust cannot see each other well enough to signal. A radio is how the lead machine warns of an oncoming truck, how the sweep reports a breakdown, and how the group agrees on a turn without stopping. Handheld radios work but are a poor fit for a cab: they are hard to hear over an engine, harder to key while driving, and their short antennas are buried inside the cage. A proper install puts the radio in the dash, the antenna on the roof, and the audio in a headset.

GMRS is the service most trail groups use because the radios are inexpensive and the range is useful. Headsets for the driver and passenger plug into the intercom, which mixes their voices together and with the radio audio, so a conversation inside the cab continues and the radio is keyed with a push-to-talk button on the wheel or the dash. Choose headsets that fit under or integrate with your helmet; a headset that will not sit properly under a helmet will be left in the glovebox. Wiring follows the same rules as lighting. Power the radio from a fused circuit at the battery, not from a tap on an unrelated accessory, and fuse it at the value the radio maker specifies. Use a switched source so the radio is not draining the battery overnight, unless you want it available with the engine off, in which case add a separate switch you will remember to turn off. Ground to bare metal, seal the connectors, and route the cable along the factory loom away from the exhaust and steering.

Radio noise is a common complaint on machines with a lot of ignition and charging electronics. If the radio hisses or pops with engine speed, the usual fixes are a ferrite choke on the power lead, a better ground, and moving the antenna coax away from the ignition wiring. A radio is a tool, not a plan. Agree on what the group does if someone drops out of contact: stop, wait a fixed time, then send the sweep back. Carry a handheld as a backup for the person walking to find the lost machine, and a spare fuse for the radio taped inside its cover. Check the antenna mount and coax connector each time you check the drive belt, about every 50 hours on the class schedule, because vibration works them loose.
