CVT Belts, Clutch Kits and Particle Separators: Keeping a UTV Drivetrain Cool

A high-temperature belt, a re-tuned clutch and a pre-filter intake are three products aimed at the same enemy, heat and dust, on belt-driven side-by-sides.

The two problems our owner reports return to most often on side-by-sides are the drive belt and the air filter. Belt failure and belt glazing under sustained load are filed against the RZR XP 1000, RZR Pro XP, Ranger XP 1000 and Maverick X3, and the maintenance schedule for the class calls dust the main killer of an engine. Three products in our parts database address those two problems directly.

The Gates G-Force RedLine CVT Belt is listed for the Maverick X3 (X3, 2017–2026), RZR XP 1000 (RZR-XP, 2014–2026), RZR Pro XP (RZR-PRO, 2020–2026) and Teryx KRX 1000 (KRX, 2020–2026). The note describes a high-temperature drive belt for hard sand and high-altitude riding. A belt fails from heat far more often than from age, and a compound that tolerates more heat before glazing is the whole of the pitch.

The SuperATV Clutch Kit is listed for the Pioneer 1000 (PIONEER, 2016–2026) and Ranger XP 1000 (RANGER-XP, 2017–2026); the note says it re-tunes engagement after installing bigger tires. Taller tires make the machine effectively taller-geared, so the clutch engages early and lugs, which is the low-speed, high-load condition that cooks a belt. The kit moves engagement back to where the engine makes power.

The SandCraft Particle Separator Intake is listed for the RZR Pro XP (2020–2026) and RZR XP 1000 (2014–2026), described as a pre-filter that removes dust before it reaches the air filter. It spins heavy dust out of the intake air before the paper or foam element sees it, which extends the life of the element and, more importantly, reduces what gets past it into the engine when the element is overdue.

Before buying a belt, confirm the exact platform and year row. The RZR-XP and RZR-PRO are separate rows in the Gates listing, and a listing covering both means the part is offered for each, not that one belt fits both; order by platform code. Then read the belt break-in procedure that ships with it. A new belt run hard from cold glazes just like an old one.

Before buying a clutch kit, be honest about what changed. Stock tires and no lugging means the kit moves engagement for no reason; a tire size or two up, or a move to altitude, gives it a job. Clutch work means opening the cover and, on reassembly, the right torque on the primary bolt. The value is in your service manual and is not one to guess.

Before buying a separator, check where it mounts and where it draws air from. It needs a clean, high mounting point and a route to the airbox that does not add a leak. A pre-filter that pulls air from behind the rear tire is a dust concentrator, not a separator.

None of these replaces the schedule. Our UTV maintenance list still calls for a belt inspection about every 50 hours and an air filter check about every 25, or about every 10 in dust and sand. A better belt inspected on the same interval will last longer; a better belt never inspected will still fail on the trail, usually on the far side of the dune. Carry the spare and the tools regardless.

This is an archive piece. It was published from the site's reference archive when the site was set up, not written by the editorial engine: no model was called for it and none of the engine's gates ran on it. Its sources are the ones listed above.

Nothing here replaces your service manual. Torque values, capacities and pressures must come from the manufacturer's published data for your exact machine.
