Factory headlights on a sport side-by-side are built to a cost and to a road-legal pattern that points down and slightly right. That is the wrong shape for a trail: it leaves the sides dark, it does not reach far enough for the speeds these machines carry in open country, and it throws no light behind you for the rider following. Aftermarket lighting solves each of those separately, and the mistake most owners make is buying one large bar and expecting it to do all three.

Think in beam patterns. A spot pattern is a narrow, long throw for seeing far down a straight wash. A flood or wide-cornering pattern is short and broad for the sides of a twisting trail. A driving pattern sits between them. A single roof bar with a spot pattern is spectacular on a dune at night and nearly useless on a tight forest trail, where everything you need to see is off to the side and the bar lights a tree a quarter mile away.

For the sides, pod lights on the A-pillar or in the ditch position are the usual answer. The Baja Designs Squadron Pro LED Pods are listed for the RZR Pro XP (RZR-PRO, 2020–2026), Maverick X3 (X3, 2017–2026), Talon 1000R (TALON, 2019–2026) and YXZ1000R (YXZ, 2016–2026), and the maker describes them as compact ditch or A-pillar lights that fill in the sides of the trail. Aim them outward and slightly down, so they light the corner you are about to enter rather than the one you are in.

Dust is the reason for a rear light. In a group ride the machine behind you sees nothing but a brown cloud, and a bright rear light is how they know where you are and when you have stopped. The Rigid Industries Chase Rear Light is listed for the RZR-XP (2014–2026), RZR-PRO, X3, KRX (2020–2026) and YXZ platforms, with rear-facing amber and red so following riders can see you in dust. Mount it high on the cage where dust settles least, and wire the red section so it brightens with the brake if the light supports it.

Amber matters more than people expect. White light bounces off dust and fog and comes straight back at you; amber penetrates further and glares less. If you ride in dust or in the Pacific Northwest fog, a set of amber-lensed pods or amber covers for your existing lights will do more for visibility than a brighter white bar. Many pods take snap-on amber covers, which is cheap insurance, and the same covers protect the lens from rock chips on gravel roads. Keep one set of white and one set of amber in the trail kit and swap them as the conditions change; it beats cleaning a dust-caked lens.

The wiring is the part that decides whether the lights work next year. Aftermarket wiring fails the same way: a butt connector under a floor, a ground to a painted bolt, a fuse tap that corrodes.

Do it properly once. Run every light through a relay so the switch carries only a signal, fuse the circuit at the battery with a fuse rated for the light maker's stated draw, and use sealed connectors with adhesive-lined heat shrink. Ground to a clean, bare metal point with a star washer, then paint or coat over it. Route wires along the factory loom, away from the exhaust, the steering shaft and anything that moves through its travel. Bundle a spare length near the battery so a broken wire can be repaired without pulling a panel.

Battery capacity is a real limit on a machine with a small charging system. A roof bar, four pods and a chase light all running at idle on a slow technical section can pull more than the stator puts back, and the machine will start hard the next morning. Wire the big lights so they are off when the engine is off, and consider a second battery or a larger one, remembering that its weight and location affect handling and that mounting hardware needs the values from the manual.

Two closing notes on lawful use. Lights aimed at another rider are a hazard, so switch to low beam or dip the bar when meeting traffic on a shared trail. And a light bar or a pod pointing forward on a plated machine may be illegal to have lit on public roads in your state, whatever it says on the box; check the rule where you ride and confirm with the managing agency for any area with its own lighting requirement.
