What Recovery Gear You Actually Need Before You Buy a Winch

Most stuck vehicles are freed with a strap, a shovel and a second vehicle, and a sensible recovery kit starts there rather than with the most expensive item.

Recovery gear is sold on fear. Walk into any off-road shop and you will find a wall of shackles, straps, boards, blocks and winches, all suggesting that without the lot you will be spending the night in a ditch. The truth is that most recoveries are simple, and a small, well-chosen kit handles nearly all of them. What matters is that every item is rated for the job, that you know how to use it, and that it is actually in the vehicle rather than in the garage.

Start with a kinetic recovery rope or a proper recovery strap. This is the single most useful item you can carry, because most recoveries involve one vehicle pulling another out of sand, mud or a hole. A kinetic rope stretches and stores energy, which lets a gentle tug do the work of a hard yank. A tow strap, the kind with metal hooks sold for road use, is not the same thing and should not be used for recovery. Do not use any strap or rope whose rating you cannot read on the label, and never work close to that figure.

Next come attachment points and shackles. A strap is only as good as what it connects to, and hooking to a bumper, an axle or a hitch ball is how people get hurt. Your vehicle needs rated recovery points, and on many trucks and SUVs the factory tow hooks are exactly that. Check your manual. Soft shackles, made from synthetic rope, have largely replaced steel bow shackles for connecting straps to points, because they are lighter and do far less damage if something lets go.

A shovel earns its place in every kit. A folding one is better than none, but a full-size shovel with a strong handle is better still if you can find room. Clearing sand or mud from in front of the tires and from under the belly of the vehicle often turns a stuck vehicle into one that drives out under its own power. It is also the tool you use to dig in a ground anchor when there is no tree and no second vehicle.

Traction boards are the item that has changed recovery most in the last decade. They are simply ridged plastic ramps that you wedge under a spinning tire to give it something to bite on. In sand and mud they work remarkably well, and they need no second vehicle and no skill beyond placing them properly and not spinning the tires on top of them, which melts the ridges off. A pair is enough for a single vehicle. Strap them where they are easy to reach.

Gloves and a recovery damper are the safety items. Heavy gloves protect your hands from synthetic rope burns, steel cable splinters and the sharp edges under a vehicle. A damper is a weighted blanket you throw over a strap or winch line under tension so that if it breaks, the blanket pulls it to the ground rather than letting it whip. A heavy jacket will do in a pinch. Everyone not actively working the recovery stands well clear, and never in line with the strap.

A tire repair kit and a means of adding air belong in the recovery kit as much as anywhere. A plugged tire reinflated on the trail gets you home. Add a good gauge, a set of deflators if you air down regularly, and a small compressor that runs from the battery. Airing down is itself a recovery technique: a stuck vehicle at road pressure will often drive straight out once the tires are softened and the contact patch spreads.

A winch is the last item on this list on purpose. It is expensive, it adds weight to the front of the vehicle, it usually needs a compatible bumper, and it does not do anything for you unless there is something solid to pull against. For a vehicle that rides with a group on trails with trees, it is a genuine safety item. For a solo desert or dune rider, boards and a shovel matter more. Buy the winch when your riding tells you that you need it, not before.

Whatever you carry, learn to use it in the driveway before you need it in a ditch. Practice connecting a strap to your recovery points, laying out a kinetic rope with slack, and placing traction boards. Read the maker's instructions for every item and note the ratings, but leave the specific figures in the manual rather than trusting memory. The best recovery is a slow, boring one where nobody is surprised.

Finally, remember that the cheapest recovery is the one you avoid. Walk an obstacle before you drive it, air down before the sand, pick a line that keeps the vehicle level, and turn around when a trail is beyond your machine. A kit does not replace judgment, and a well-stocked one can encourage people to push further than they should. Carry the gear, and then ride as though you would rather not use it.
