What a Stop-Ride Notice Actually Means, and What It Does Not

Most recalls ask you to make an appointment. A small number tell you to stop using the machine until it is fixed. That instruction, usually called a stop-ride or stop-sale notice in the powersports world, is not decoration. It means the manufacturer and the regulator have concluded that the defect can cause harm in ordinary use, without warning, and that the risk is high enough that waiting for the repair on the trail is not acceptable.

Campaign 24V-153 is the example in the desk's records that carries the flag. It covers the Polaris RZR XP 1000 on the RZR-XP platform for model years 2019 through 2021, for a fuel line that may chafe against the frame. The remedy is an inspection and rerouting of the fuel line at no charge. A fuel line wearing through next to a hot engine is the kind of failure that does not give a rider a second chance, which is why the notice says to park it.

Stop-ride means exactly that. It does not mean ride gently, ride only on easy trails, or ride it to the dealer. If the dealer is any distance away, the notice expects the machine to be trailered or the dealer to arrange transport. Manufacturers frequently cover pickup under a stop-ride campaign, so ask before you move it yourself. Riding a machine under an active stop-ride instruction also complicates any warranty or insurance conversation if something goes wrong.

There is a related but different instruction that appears on road vehicles. Campaign 25V-741, covering the JL platform for model years 2020 through 2025, advised owners to park outside and away from structures and not to charge the vehicle until the remedy was completed. That is not a stop-drive instruction. It is a containment instruction: the vehicle may be used, but the risk while it is parked and charging is managed by where it sits. Read the exact wording of the notice, because these are not interchangeable.

A stop-sale is the dealer-side equivalent. When a stop-sale is issued, dealers may not deliver affected new or used units in inventory until the remedy has been performed. This is why a machine you have a deposit on can sit for weeks. A stop-sale on its own does not always come with a stop-ride for existing owners, and the two are issued separately. The notice will say which applies.

When a stop-ride notice arrives before the remedy is available, owners are in an awkward position. Interim letters exist for this situation, and they are a warning without a fix. The correct response is still to park the machine. Manufacturers sometimes offer loaner units or goodwill in these cases, but that is at their discretion and varies by dealer. What does not vary is the instruction on the notice.

For an owner reading this site, the desk marks stop-ride campaigns distinctly in its recall listings and applies the fitment as filed. A 2018 or 2022 RZR XP 1000 is not covered by 24V-153, because the campaign names 2019 through 2021. Being outside the range does not mean the machine is immune to the same wear, and an owner of an adjacent year who is worried can ask a dealer to look at the same routing during a service visit. That inspection would not be a recall repair, and may be billable.

Confirm any stop-ride status against the NHTSA or CPSC published notice and the manufacturer's own recall lookup, by VIN. A forum post or a dealer's recollection is not the document; the notice is. If the notice says stop, the machine stays on the trailer or in the garage until a dealer has recorded the remedy as completed against that VIN, whatever anyone else tells you about how it has been running.
