Water Crossings Without Damage: Reading the Ford and Protecting the Machine
Water is where trail machines drown engines, contaminate fluids and lose belts, and every one of those failures starts with a crossing that was not read first.

A water crossing is the most photographed moment on most trails and the one most likely to write off an engine. The machine does not need to be submerged to be damaged. Water pulled into an intake destroys an engine instantly. Water past an axle seal or a differential breather contaminates the oil without any outward sign and destroys the gears over the following months. Water in a CVT housing wets the belt. Every one of those outcomes is avoidable, and avoiding them starts before the tires get wet.
Read the crossing first, on foot if there is any doubt. Depth, current, bottom and exit are the four things to look for. Depth relative to your machine's intake, not to a truck that went through earlier. Current strong enough to push the machine sideways is current strong enough to roll it. A soft or rocky bottom will drop a wheel into a hole you cannot see from the bank. A steep or slick exit holds you in the water while the engine pulls at the intake. Walk it with a stick; if it is too fast or deep to walk, it is too fast or deep to drive.
Know where your machine draws its air. On most side-by-sides the engine intake and the CVT intake are under the bodywork somewhere near the top of the engine bay, and on many quads they are under the seat. A plated truck or SUV draws through the fender or the grille. Find your intake in daylight, in the garage, because that height is the depth limit for the machine. Factory snorkels on some models raise it, and aftermarket snorkels raise it further, but a snorkel that is not sealed at every joint is a straw for water, not a shield against it.
The other openings matter almost as much. Differential, transmission and engine breathers on a quad or side-by-side often end low, and water enters them the moment the housing cools in the crossing and draws air in. Front differential and clutch housing water intrusion is a recognized pattern on the Polaris Sportsman 570 (SPORTSMAN, 2014 to 2026), Can-Am Outlander 850 (OUTLANDER, 2016 to 2026) and Polaris Ranger 570 (RANGER-MID, 2015 to 2026). Routing the breathers high, which is a cheap job with hose and zip ties, prevents most of it. On a truck, the axle and transfer case breathers deserve the same attention.
Speed through the water is the decision that most people get wrong in both directions. Too fast throws a bow wave over the hood and into the intake. Too slow lets the machine settle and gives the current time to work on it. The aim is a steady walking pace that pushes a small bow wave ahead of the machine, so that the water level at the engine bay is actually lower than the still water level. Enter in low range, hold a steady throttle, do not stop, do not change gear and do not lift off until the front wheels are climbing the exit.
If the engine stops in the water, do not try to restart it. An engine that has drawn water will hydraulically lock on the first compression stroke and bend a rod. Get the machine out with a winch or a tow strap from the bank, pull the spark plugs, and turn the engine over by hand or on the starter with the plugs out to expel water before anything else. Then change the oil and check the airbox. This is one of the reasons a trail kit carries a plug wrench and a length of strap. It is also the reason you walked the crossing first.
After the crossing, the job is not finished. Stop on the far bank. Drain the CVT housing if it has a plug and drive gently until the belt dries, because a wet belt slips and a slipping belt glazes. Test the brakes with a few light applications to dry the pads. Look at the exhaust for steam that persists. At the end of the ride, check every fluid that could have taken water: engine oil for a milky color, differential and gearbox oil by pulling the fill plug and looking, and the airbox for dampness. Milky oil is changed immediately, not at the next interval.
The rear differential and axle seals on the Toyota Tacoma (N300, 2016 to 2026), 4Runner (N280, 2010 to 2026) and Jeep Wrangler JK (JK, 2007 to 2018) are known to weep after wading, and the truck schedule's differential fluid check about every fifteen thousand miles is far too long after a season of crossings. Check the fluid after any ride with deep water. The schedule for side-by-sides calls for greasing every zerk about every twenty-five hours; after water, grease straight away, because fresh grease pushes water out of the joints before it can do harm.
One last point about the water itself. Many crossings are on designated routes at designated fords, and the managing agency has chosen them because the bank and the bed can take the traffic. Crossing anywhere else damages the streambank, silts the water and is the sort of visible impact that closes trails. Stay on the designated crossing even when a shallower line is visible upstream, and confirm with the managing agency before you go whether the crossing is open, because seasonal closures for spawning fish and high water are common and are not always signed at the bank.
