Utah before the heat: Sand Hollow, Little Sahara and Moab in mid-June

The Desert Southwest rides autumn through spring, and the site's regional guidance is blunt that midsummer daytime riding is genuinely dangerous. Mid-June is the last weekend the desk is comfortable pointing anyone at Utah's desert until autumn, and only on the terms below: start at first light, be off the rock by late morning, and treat the heat as the primary hazard. With that understood, three places are still worth it.

Sand Hollow State Park, run by the Utah Division of State Parks, is the year-round option. It has open dunes for beginners alongside sandstone trails such as The Maze and Double Sammy that run well into the hard end, rated a 6 overall. A park entrance fee applies and Utah OHV registration or a non-resident OHV permit is generally required. The most comfortable riding is October through April. Check with the managing agency before you set off.

Sand Hollow's reservoir is the reason it works in June: the group can ride the sandstone at dawn and be in the water by lunch. The sandstone trails are ledgy and unforgiving of a poor line, and the difficulty climbs fast once you leave the dunes. A UTV on The Maze should have a spare belt and the tools to fit it, because the slow, hot crawling loads a CVT belt harder than anything else.

Little Sahara Recreation Area, managed by the BLM Fillmore Field Office, is around 60,000 acres of dunes and sagebrush flats, rated a 4. Sand Mountain is the steep, big-hill draw and the rest is open free-riding. A BLM day-use or annual fee is charged at the entrance and whip flags are generally required on the dunes. Spring and autumn are best, and Easter weekend is famously the busiest of the year. Check with the managing agency before you set off.

In June, Little Sahara is quiet compared with its spring peak, which is the argument for going. The dunes sit high enough that mornings are tolerable. The sand is soft and deep, so air down to the figure in your service manual, carry a shovel and a strap, and stay off Sand Mountain until you have watched a few machines go up it and come back down.

Moab, managed by the BLM Moab Field Office, needs no introduction and rates an 8 overall, with individual trails from 3 to 10. Hell's Revenge is a 6; Pritchett Canyon a 10. There is no general permit, but some trails require a day-use fee and group sizes are capped. Spring and autumn are the season; midsummer surface temperatures on slickrock are punishing, and that is the site's own description. Check with the managing agency before you set off.

If you do go to Moab in June, go for a short, well-known trail and be done by mid-morning. Slickrock holds heat and the ledges leave nowhere shaded to fix a problem. Carry far more water than seems reasonable, tell someone your route and turnaround time, and do not let a group of four become a group of two on a 10-rated trail because half of them wanted to push on.

Heat kills machines before it kills people, and the signs are the same on both. A clear radiator screen and a full coolant level are the pre-ride items that matter most; the capacity is in your service manual. Check the air filter at the end of the morning, because desert dust is the main killer of an engine in the UTV and ATV classes and the filter interval shortens sharply in these conditions.

Then leave it for the season. The desert will be better in October, the same trails will still be there, and the regional guidance exists because people have got this wrong before. This weekend is a morning; it is not a summer.
