Riding the South in July: Hidden Falls, Ocala and Croom, early and carefully

The South's riding season runs autumn through spring, and the site's own regional guidance calls summer heat and humidity the limiting factor. It is. But all three places this weekend are open year-round, and a group that treats July as a dawn-to-noon proposition can still have a good day. Read the heat warnings in each entry as the main point, not a footnote.

Hidden Falls Adventure Park near Marble Falls, Texas, is private land in the Hill Country: about 3,000 acres with trails marked from easy to extreme rock on granite, clay and forest trail, rated a 6. Paid day admission and a waiver are required, and because it is private, no state OHV permit applies. It is open year-round with summer heat as the limiting factor. Confirm the operating calendar with the park before you go.

The granite at Hidden Falls is the closest thing to real rock crawling in the South, and the marked grades are honest. In July the rock radiates heat by mid-morning, so run the hard sections first while it is cool and leave the shaded forest loops for later. Carry water for the machine as well as the people; a UTV working hard on rock in this heat will need its radiator screen clear and its coolant level checked before the day starts.

Ocala National Forest OHV Trails in Florida, Forest Service land, is long designated loops through sugar sand and pine scrub, rated a 3. Difficulty is deep sand rather than obstacles. A Florida national forests OHV permit is generally required and riding is limited to designated routes. It is open year-round, with autumn through spring the most comfortable. Confirm with the managing agency before you go.

Sugar sand in summer is both easier and harder than it looks. Morning humidity packs it a little; by afternoon it is loose and bottomless, and a machine that bogs in it will overheat quickly while you dig. Air down to the pressure in your service manual, keep momentum, and stay on the designated route, because the scrub either side is fragile and the Forest Service enforces the closure.

Croom Motorcycle Area, in Withlacoochee State Forest near Brooksville, is run by the Florida Forest Service. It is around 2,600 acres of open sand hills and trail, rated a 3, with hill climbs as the draw. A daily or annual Croom use fee is typically charged and Florida OHV titling rules apply. It is open year-round; summer afternoons bring heat and thunderstorms. Confirm with the managing agency before you go.

Croom's afternoon storms are the schedule-setter. Florida summer thunderstorms arrive with lightning and there is no shelter on the sand hills, so plan to be loaded by early afternoon. The open sand hills are a good place for a new rider to learn, but the same rules about whip flags and looking before you crest apply as anywhere.

Heat is a machine problem as much as a human one. A packed radiator screen is the most common cause of overheating on a trail machine, and Florida sand and Texas dust both pack it fast. Check the screen at every stop, check the air filter at the end of the day, and expect to shorten the filter interval considerably in these conditions. The relevant capacities are in your service manual.

If the forecast is for extreme heat, the honest advice is to skip the weekend. The trails will be in better shape in October, and the desk would rather you read this again then than push a machine and a group through a day that the region's own season guidance says not to.
