Pacific Northwest dry season: Tillamook dust, fire rules and plover closures

The Pacific Northwest is described in the site's regional guidance as year-round at low elevation, with the passes gating through winter. What that leaves out is that July and August are dry in a way that surprises riders who only know the region by reputation. The trails that are deep mud from November to April are, for a few weeks, dust.

Tillamook State Forest's OHV trails, split across Browns Camp, Jordan Creek and Diamond Mill, are managed by the Oregon Department of Forestry and run to over 250 miles. In the dry season the clay that holds water in winter bakes hard and the surface breaks down into a fine powder that fills the air behind every machine. Visibility on the two-way sections drops to nothing behind a group, and passing on a blind corner is a real risk.

The Department of Forestry also sets fire restrictions on state forest land, and in a dry summer these can include limits on where and when motorized use is allowed, not just on campfires. Those restrictions are set by the department as conditions change and are not something we can report as fact for any given weekend. Ask the managing agency what is actually open before you go.

Walker Valley ORV Area near Mount Vernon, Washington, is smaller and managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources. Its place record notes the wettest months produce the deepest mud, and the dry-season version of the same trails shows the damage those months did: ruts that set like concrete, exposed roots, and rock sections that were hidden under water in spring. A Discover Pass is generally required to park.

On the coast, the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area behaves differently. Sand does not have a dry season in the same sense, but the Siuslaw National Forest's seasonal closures for snowy plover nesting typically run through the summer, and the boundaries of those closures are the thing to check. Riding into a posted nesting closure is a citation and, more importantly, damages a recovery effort that has taken decades. Oregon ATV permits and whip flags are generally required.

Coastal fog is the other summer variable at the dunes. Mornings near Winchester Bay can be socked in until late morning with visibility that makes the steep faces genuinely dangerous, and then clear to a bright, windy afternoon. Ride the big faces when you can see the top of them.

For the machine, dry-season Northwest riding is dust riding, and the maintenance guidance the site publishes treats dust as severe use. The UTV air filter interval drops from every 25 hours to every 10 in severe conditions, and dirt bike guidance calls the filter a per-ride item in dust. Radiator screens fill with the same fine material.

Spark arrestors are generally required on public land in both states; confirm with the managing agency before you go. A dry meadow beside a forest road in August is the kind of place a hot exhaust starts something, and a fire in the Coast Range closes the whole system for everyone. Tread Lightly principles are not decoration here.
