Midwest weekend: Silver Lake, Badlands, Wayne National Forest and St. Joe

The Midwest season runs spring through autumn with a thaw closure in between, and early August is the middle of it. Four places within a long day's tow of most of the region cover sand, mud, forest trail and rock. None of them is at the extreme end of the scale, which makes this a good weekend for a mixed group or a new machine.

Silver Lake Sand Dunes in Michigan is the one open dune area in the region, managed by the Michigan DNR and rated a 3 with a green marking. Difficulty is about sand skill rather than obstacles. The requirements are specific: a Michigan ORV license and trail permit, a vehicle inspection at the gate, and a whip flag. The area is open roughly April to October and closed outside the posted season. The managing agency is the authority on any of it, so check before you load the trailer.

Silver Lake is busy on August weekends and the gate queue is part of the day. Get there early, have your paperwork ready, and know that the inspection is real; a missing flag or a loud exhaust will send you back to the lot. Once in, the dunes reward a machine that is aired down and a driver who keeps momentum. Your tire pressures for sand are in your service manual; do not copy someone else's number.

Badlands Off Road Park near Attica, Indiana, is private land and rated a 5. It is a former quarry with sand, mud and dedicated rock-crawling sections that span easy to hard, which makes it the most varied place on this list. Paid day admission and a signed waiver are required, and because it is private, no state permit is needed. It is open most of the year on posted operating days. Confirm the operating calendar with the park before you go.

The quarry rock at Badlands is where a Midwestern group can learn crawling without driving to Utah. The sections are short and the runouts are safe, so a spotter can walk a beginner through a line. Bring a strap and a spotter's gloves, and keep the UTVs and full-size rigs on the sections marked for them.

Wayne National Forest OHV Trails, in southeastern Ohio, is Forest Service land with several separate systems totalling well over 100 miles, mostly moderate wooded singletrack and ATV trail, rated a 4. A Wayne National Forest OHV trail permit is generally required in addition to Ohio APV registration. The season is typically mid-April through mid-December, with closures for winter and the spring thaw. The managing agency is the authority on any of it, so check before you load the trailer.

Wayne's clay and mud are the region's classic hazard. In a wet week the trails get slick fast and damage builds quickly, so if it has rained hard, consider one of the other three instead. The systems are separate from each other, so check which trailhead you actually want before you set the navigation.

St. Joe State Park in Missouri, run by Missouri State Parks, is the easy option: around 800 acres of open sand flats on old lead-mine tailings plus wooded ORV trail, rated a 3. A Missouri State Parks ORV permit is generally required for each vehicle and helmets are typically required. It is open year-round with reduced hours in winter. After any of these, clean the machine. Mud and sand in the Midwest do more slow damage than rock does, packing radiator screens, wearing brake pads and washing grease out of joints. A radiator screen full of mud is the most common cause of overheating on a trail machine, and the fix is a hose and ten minutes.
