A side-by-side is the easiest off-road machine to get into and the easiest to buy badly. The showroom floor rewards excitement, and excitement points you at the fastest thing in the building. The better question is what you will actually do with the machine on an ordinary Saturday. Answer that honestly and the choice between a sport machine and a utility machine mostly makes itself.

The sport class is built for speed over rough ground. Machines like the Polaris RZR XP 1000 on the RZR-XP platform, 2014 to 2026, the Can-Am Maverick X3 on the X3 platform, 2017 to 2026, the Honda Talon 1000R on the TALON platform, 2019 to 2026, and the Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000 on the KRX platform, 2020 to 2026, all have long suspension travel, low seating and wide stances. They are superb on desert two-track and dunes. They are wide for a narrow forest trail and have little room for cargo.

The utility class trades some of that travel for a cargo bed, a higher seating position and a drivetrain set up for pulling. The Polaris Ranger XP 1000 on the RANGER-XP platform, 2017 to 2026, the Can-Am Defender HD10 on the DEFENDER platform, 2016 to 2026, and the Honda Pioneer 1000 on the PIONEER platform, 2016 to 2026, are the obvious examples. If your riding includes hauling firewood, feeding stock or carrying a cooler and tools to a work site, this is where you belong, and they are still perfectly good trail machines.

Between the two sit machines that try to do both. The Yamaha Wolverine RMAX2 1000 on the RMAX platform, 2021 to 2026, is a trail machine with a bed and a quieter, more sedate character than a pure sport model. The Polaris Ranger 570 on the RANGER-MID platform, 2015 to 2026, is a narrower, lighter utility machine that fits trails and pickup beds a full-size Ranger cannot. For many first-time buyers a middle machine is the right call precisely because it forgives a vague answer to the Saturday question.

Width matters more than most buyers expect. Many trail systems in the Midwest and Appalachia have a posted width limit at the trailhead, and a full-width sport machine may simply not be allowed on them. Check the trail systems you expect to ride before you settle on a machine, and confirm the current rules with the managing agency before you go, because limits change. A machine that cannot get on the trails near you is a very expensive garage ornament.

Transmission type is the other big split. Most machines in this class use a continuously variable transmission driven by a belt. It is simple to operate and works well, but the belt is a wear item and a consumable that you will learn to care for, which is why our UTV maintenance guidance lists a belt inspection every 50 hours. The Yamaha YXZ1000R on the YXZ platform, 2016 to 2026, uses a sequential manual gearbox instead, which some drivers love and others find demanding, and the Honda Talon and Pioneer use an automatic gearbox with clutches rather than a belt.

Seating drives the decision more than horsepower does. A two-seat machine is lighter, narrower and cheaper, and if you mostly ride alone or with one passenger it is the right tool. If you have a family or ride with friends who do not own machines, a four-seat model changes the trip. It is also longer, which affects ramp angles and trailer choice. Think about who rides with you most often, not who might ride with you once.

New machines carry a warranty and the reassurance that nobody has abused them. Used machines carry a lower price and, if you are careful, most of the same reliability. When looking at a used side-by-side, check the hour meter against the condition of the seat, pedals and belt cover, look for mud packed behind the radiator screen, and look for cracked plastics and bent A-arms that hint at hard use. Ask for service records. A machine that has had its air filter checked every 25 hours as the UTV schedule suggests is a machine someone cared about.

Budget for what comes after the purchase. A helmet for every seat, a trailer or a way to transport the machine, a spare belt and the tools to fit it, a basic recovery kit, registration and any state permits, and insurance where required all add up before you have ridden anywhere. Many first-time buyers spend everything on the machine and then cannot afford the things that make it usable. A less expensive model with a complete kit is a better first year.

Whatever you choose, read the owner's manual before the first ride and write down the service intervals in a place you will see them. The values that go with each job, the torque and capacities and pressures, are in the service manual and nowhere else. Learn where the belt cover, air filter and radiator screen are on your machine before you need to find them on a trail, and your first side-by-side will be one you keep.
